A Convention on Higher Education and Felicitation to the retired college teachers and outstanding achievers was organized by the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers’ (AMUCT) on Sunday, 16th July, 2017, at the Auditorium, Canara F G College. Mangalore. Honourable Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof K Byarappa was the Chief Guest, Sri CA Vaman Kamath, Chartered Accountant and Alternate Treasurer of CHS Association and Dr Malini K V , Principal Canara College were the Guests of Honour on the occasion.


Honourable Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof K Byarappa speaking after felicitating Retired Teachers, Ph D awardees and special achievers, said, Post-retirement, teachers should remain active by contributing to the education field in particular and society in general by publishing their research papers and by involving themselves in community service. He further added that teachers should guide students to expose themselves to the society and know ground realities. If students are exposed to rural life they could think of contributions to rural development once they pass out of their college or university. Stressing the need for research guides and scholars to update themselves with new methodology in research, he said that every subject has its own significance in research. Prof Byrappa said when he took over as the vice chancellor of Mangalore University, there were 340 research scholars and now there are 1,050 research scholars, he hopes to take this to 1,300 by the next year. The Vice-Chancellor said he showed no disparity between undergraduate college teachers and teachers in the university campus teaching post graduate courses. He considered college teachers on par with university teachers and took steps to encourage them by allowing eligible college teachers to guide research scholars.
Sri CA Vaman Kamath, Chartered Accountant and Alternate Treasurer of CHS Association, opined that there is a need to advocate a change in the current education system in order to inculcate skills and the sense of responsibility among students, which will make them confident when they are exposed to the practical world.
Dr Malini K V, Principal Canara College lauded the efforts of AMUCT in organizing the teachers for strengthening higher education.
Prof K Byrappa released the bulletin of AMUCT on the occasion. Bulletin Editor Dr S N Kakathkar was also present during its release.
AMUCT president and office bearers felicitated Prof K Byrappa for being the recipient of the Prestigious Prof CN R Rao National Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Science during 2017 at National Science Congress. Dr Norbert Lobo National Vice President – AIFUCTO, presented the felicitation speech.
President Dr Ummappa Poojary introduced the guests and presented welcome address. General Secretary Dr. B A Kumara Hegde proposed vote of thanks. Around 250 college teachers participated in the deliberations. Dr Denis Fernandes compeered the programme.
